Hey friends, check this out. If you or someone you know is planning on coming to Costa Rica but only has one or two weeks, Nature Air (Costa Rica's domestic airline) is offering a AWESOME deal for those of you traveling to Costa Rica with limited time. Costa Rica by air in one trip has become a whole lot easier – thanks to a year-round flight pass program by Nature Air that offers travelers unlimited flights in either a one- or two-week period. “One of the greatest things about the Costa Rica air pass from Nature Air is that flights can be reserved at any time – allowing travelers to truly seize that spirit of spontaneity and experience the many beautiful sides of Costa Rica, from the rainforests to the beaches and the valleys,” said Claire Saylor, Director of Marketing, Nature Air. “In one day, guests can soar by zipline through the jungle canopy, swim with hundreds of tropical fish in a clear blue ocean and then, from a mountaintop, enjoy a glass of wine as the sun dips low over the valley – true pura vida.” The cost for the Nature Air Pass ranges from US$282.00 (one week) to US$499.00 (two weeks) per passenger. And explorers who can’t get enough of the Central American region can upgrade their pass to include an international round-trip extension to either Bocas del Toro in the northern Caribbean of Panama or Managua, the capital of Nicaragua (US$150.00 extra). Nature Air is an award winning Costa Rica airline and has the distinction of being the world’s first carbon-neutral airline and, was recently awarded a 2011 Global Vision award byTravel + Leisure magazine. The airline offers 74 daily flights to 15 destinations in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama. It was an early Saturday Morning. (8am is early for me) I had been working until 2 am the previous night but I was determined to make it to the Feria Agricola y Artesanal (Agricultural and Crafts Fair). A weekly event in Puerto Viejo filled with amazing fruits, vegetables, dairy, home made: Chocolates, bread, honey and much more... A joy for both the taste buds and the eyes.Located in the center of town in the space that is normally reserved for the PV Flea Market, right next to the hardware store. If something catches your eye and is foreign to you, don't hesitate to ask questions. The purveyors are very proud of their products and love to share information... and sometimes a taste!

As you can see it is not huge unlike some of the 2 city block long farmer's markets in Chicago, but there is plenty to take in.
First stop: A cup of much needed coffee courtesy of Paul from Caribeans Coffee and Chocolates. Now I can almost fully open my eyes.
Here are some of the great products that Caribeans offers: Organic and Fair Trade - Coffee, Cacao, Chocolate and Honey.
Conveniently right next to Caribeans is a young lady making empenadas from scratch. Chicken, beef or Vegie... "One of each please" Yum!
Now with my hands full with a cup of coffee and 3 empenadas I go to take a look around... and take some pictures. (I'm sure it was a funny site)
Eggs eggs eggs. I almost never see a white egg here in Costa Rica. I also noticed that the yolks are much more delicate than the eggs I find in the States. The yolk always breaks.
There is a flower and plant vendor there. Who always has a beautiful selection. One of the fruit and Veg vendors I regularly visit. I doubt he is Jewish but I see a lot of people wearing a Star of David here, I need to ask him why next time.
Ana smell testing the first Bell Peper I have found here. It was so fragrant and full of flavor. I hope they return. A whole cooler full of homemade Natilla (in Costa Rica Natilla is similar to Sour Cream) There is no shortage of Plantains here. It's also not to difficult to find Bananas.. they grow in my back yard.
These are "Snake Fruit" or Salak. Very tasty. Native to Bali, a local botanical garden introduced the palm has been harvesting them. Here is some good info - http://gardenhealth.info/2011/04/23/snake-fruit-salak-exotic-strange-and-delicious/
Tranquilo mae.
Lots of little kids with their family.
Que grande! Big onions. About as fresh as they get. Thanks for visiting. You can find more photos of the Market here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/yippytrip/sets/72157627312785903/with/6044591193/ Please feel free to pass on this link.

Very interesting read, not sure what to make of it. I have to assume that the "War against drugs" must very difficult here. Didn't know this was in Chicago...: Found here: insidecostarica.com/dailynews/2011/october/25/costarica11102502.htm The heads of 13.000 police officials around the world, recognized the work of a narcotics officer in Costa Rica as the best in the world. The award was bestowed on the agent, whose identity was withheld, in a conference held in Chicago by the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
The agent was honoured for his work in fighting international drug trafficking and primarily for his role in the capture of alleged Colombian drug trafficker, Alexander Leudo Nieves, who was one of the most wanted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The capture occurred in Santa Domingo de Heredia three months back.
Leudo was even able to obtain Costa Rican nationalization which is now impeding efforts to extradite him to the United States.
The best police officer in the world forms part of Costa Rica's Policía de Control de Drogas (PCD) and has a record of participating in a number of international investigations in 2010 and 2011.
The nomination of "agent X" was made by the DEA to the police chiefs association that represents 13.000 police officials in 81 countries, including the United States and Mexico.
The officer's identity is not revealed for security reasons.
During the conference on Monday the Chiefs also recognized the important work of other police officials involved in investigations to stop Mexican, Colombian, Costa Rican and other drug traffickers.
The authorities of Costa Rica's Ministerio de Seguridad Pública sent congratulations to both agent X and other officers urging others to follow this example and that of many others who excel in their daily work.
The director of the DEA office in Costa Rica, Philip Springer, nominated agent X for the award, calling the work of the agent as the backbone of each case they investigate.
According to Springer, "he simply is a great person. In my 26 years in law enforcement, I have rarely met anyone like him. This is what we all investigators should aspire to be. We are very proud of him".
Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica, Anne S. Andrew, said that "agent X is a special police officer, a role model for integrity and public service and a valuable partner for us in our work with the Ministry of Public Security to help ensure that Costa Rica is a place safer for its citizens".

New Packaging Tells You How to Reuse It Creatively <!--[endif]--> A tub of paint can be turned into a lamp (bottom) while its lid becomes a clock (top) in these creative reuse ideas by Luis Carlos Calderón.
Photos: Quehagoconesto.org. Creative crafters can come up with all sorts of beautiful and innovative ways to turntrash into treasure. But faced with a empty plastic bottle or packing carton, most people -- even those who know reuse gets more environmental points than recycling -- are going to take the path of least resistance and chuck it into a bin. A clever idea out of Costa Rica, however, aims to increase reuse by giving consumers clever reutilization ideas right on the product packages themselves. Reuse Ideas On Packaging "We put ideas in everyone's hands" is the slogan of Quehagoconesto.org (meaning "What do I do with this"), a project that has succeeded in getting several Central American brands to incorporate reuse-instruction labels -- bearing ideas generated by design students -- onto their packaging. Reuse labels on a jar of hair gel, a lightbulb box, a pack of toilet paper, and a food container. Photo: Quehagoconesto.org.
A big tub of Plastigel hair gel, for example, has icons on its label suggesting reuse as a fish tank, a napkin holder, half of a set of barbells, or a planter. A packing box could be turned into a table, a shoe rack, an iPod holder, or a model plane. Read the rest of the story HERE

Scouring the internet I happened upon this new and very positive review of Koki Beach in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. I agree with everything it says. Great place to visit if you are in town. Here is the Article: Maxing Out the Puerto Viejo Vibe at Koki BeachSuffice to say, the atmosphere in Puerto Viejo, which is located in the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, is quite different from the beach towns facing the Pacific. For one, Puerto Viejo has a more reggae bit to it, livelier, and arguably closer to Mother Nature. Amidst all of the beaches, hotels, and restaurants in Puerto Viejo, perhaps nothing could be much closer to this observed feel than KOKi Beach.

Ana and I were getting cabin fever spending all of our time either inside working on the site, or at a Disco working (I DJ for a living). We missed the sun and the beach. What better way to get reacquainted then to head out in the the deep blue on an awesome fishing, snorkeling, drinking, laughing expedition. We were invited by the friendly folks at Wahoo Fishing and Tours for Fishing in Puerto Viejo. Owned and operated by Nick and Janet they really know how to cover all of the bases when out at sea. We set our alarm for 7am the previous night. Waking upt that early we came to the conclusion that we would need at least an hour to wake up, drink some coffee, get ready and meet the boat at 8am (we live about 2 min away on scooter). We made it just in time. Ana getting ready for the trip, and by getting ready I mean sitting back and relaxing. 2 of the 3 Wahoo Crew (Janet and Nick) loading up the boat. Nice shirt! That would look great on me wink.. wink... Here is their awesome hunting machine. This is like a stealth bomber to fish and just as effective. They should be afraid... very afraid. About 10 min after we launched we started seeing dolphins. It's always a treat here because they are completely wild. They swam next to the boat for a good 10 min and then prob got board of us. Also note how calm the water is, Lake Michigan is rougher than the Caribbean was on this day. Lots of great equipment on the boat. Different lures, fish finder/GPS, live bait well etc... Always remember folks Safety First! Obviously for someone else... All this fancy equipment and this is what our master fisherman (and local) Pino prefers... He also will get the most bites guaranteed. We started getting the gear ready to fish but first we needed bait... Luckily Janet knew just what to make to score the good stuff. We set up the trap waited patiently and BAM... We got our first bite. He was a fighter but we managed to subdue it. You have to keep bait fresh and alive. Just incase the fish didn't find him tasty we also had a bait well full of sardines. We decided to release the big guy but he was skeptical about us and on guard for the rest of the trip. Ana was getting hungry so I got down to business. Bite! I think Janet scored the first one. She has a secret technique to lure the fish. I think she used the same technique to catch Captain Nick... This guy drinks like a .... Bite! Mackerel. Sorry, you're not getting any help from me. I want to eat you. BAM! Another. Pino. Our competition. A little later we decided to do a little snorkeling to cool off. Lots of beautiful coral and I swam through a school of Jacks. We lost Pino for a little bit. Pino swims about 30 miles an hour and can hold his breath for a ridiculous amount of time, I think he takes the power from all the fish he kills, like that guy from HEROS. When we found him he had a nice lobster in hand... Couldn't ask for a better day. Sunny, calm, biting fish, just what we needed. Pino decided he wanted to keep this one. Thanks for reading. Be on the lookout for our Puerto Viejo Activities Video featuring Wahoo and other great things to do in The Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica area. From the WHOLE FOODS website: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/earthutrip/ This back-to-school season, we're teaming up with EARTH University to give our customers a chance to win a trip to Costa Rica to visit EARTH University's lush campus in Guácimo, Limón. We think this field trip knocks the socks off the planetarium, the post office and — believe it or not — the zoo. Five winners will embark on a seven-day Costa Rican adventure where they will: - Experience EARTH's hands-on approach to education in sustainable agriculture, responsible business and community development.
- Get their hands dirty working on the university's farm where the creamy, responsibly-produced Whole Trade EARTH University bananas are grown.
- Discover how EARTH's innovative growing, packaging and shipping methods are helping to save our planet's precious resources.
- Explore vibrant Costa Rica, relax on the majestic beaches of Puerto Viejo, sample local cuisine and take a boat trip along the coast in search of dolphins.
For more details on this trip, check out the full itinerary and be sure to enter by September 30, 2011. No purchase necessary.
